A venue with a difference

Colour Blind
Eight newly recruited European Graduates, working for a multinational communications technology business, are sitting around a boardroom table. Each team member is blind folded and is holding a collection of small irregular, coloured plastic shapes. They have to work together abiding by the rules to establish the answer to a complex puzzle: “which are the two components that are missing from the set of shapes we have in our possession?"
As the exercise proceeds, it rapidly becomes clear how different the individual styles of communication are and how different the needs of individuals are. This understanding can be usefully applied in any situation of instructing, teaching or coaching and can be a valuable management skill in ensuring that staff are confident and well motivated. The exercise highlights the need for a process for managing the communication and that everyone in the group understands that process and adheres to it. The exercise highlights the different patterns of communication e.g. who tends to speak first? Who is always listened to? Who will always argue with each other or challenge each other’s position? It helps to highlight that it is important that everyone’s contribution is heard and valued.
